A poem for Paul Kagame, my Hero: Please don’t seek a third term.

Crowds are cheering, that’s ok;

They are all asking that you stay.

But they have cheered for those before, they will cheer for the next person too;

Let them cheer. Cheering; that’s what they do.

Tell them you are no stage performer, you are an artist;

And when you play your blues, you don’t do requests.

The elite have arrived, they too want you to stay,

For they’re afraid your leaving is their decay.

They were confortable, but now you have to go;

So, you will upset many of them, but that hasn’t stopped you before.

You don’t owe them anything, you aren’t their in-law – So tell them you can’t stay;

You’ve been around a long time, you’ve paid your dues – Like late B.B. King would say.

Rwanda is larger than these people’s lives, than yours even;

It is our forefathers and the future we borrow from our children;
That covenant is for us, but for them too;
they are not here now, but I will tell them about you too

You are the one who should leave, you were born to leave;

Others, they weren’t even supposed to be there;

They are a mere mistake of nature and that’s their people’s demise;

You are different from them; don’t use the same excuse.

What’s at stake isn’t being president; pfff… I am not talking about that;

Impostors are easy to find, nothing special in that;

For you it is just a stage in a purpose-driven existence;

To serve Rwandans with courage and great sacrifice.

You have played many acts, there is one last piece remaining;

Your exit act, the one that everyone’s been waiting.

You have a date with history; the moment is yours to cease;

Please leave, so that what’s written be accomplished;

Oh, what am I saying? You know all this, of course.

I was only worried that with all the noise,

You wouldn’t hear the call when it comes;

The time isn’t right, that’s just part of it; why should it be?

Easy? The road to success isn’t supposed to be.

It is best of you to leave, so that we can stay;

I know it is the right thing, even though it breaks my heart to say;

I am asking you to leave, because I want you to stay;

Don’t worry about us, I promise we’ll be okey.

If you leave, we’ll be walking stronger and tall,

I bet, you won’t be far, to hear when we call

Then if you do, the campaign will be on us,

We got you comrade; you will always be the best among us.
